Proposed Changes to NC DWI Laws

Senate Bill 691 proposes significant changes to North Carolina's DWI laws. The most dramatic would be requiring any driver who blows .08 or higher on a first offense DWI conviction to have to have an ignition interlock device installed on their car for one year. The current rule makes drivers who blow .15 or higher and are convicted get the ignition interlock. The change proposed would essentially mean everyone convicted of a DWI would have to have the ignition interlock installed on their car. Refusing to take the test won't help avoid the ignition interlock under this proposed law: drivers that refuse to take a chemical test (breath or blood)…
